Stockton, San Joaquin County
Ocean-going ships reach Stockton by way of a deepwater channel that follows the San Joaquin River inland from San Francisco Bay. The Port of Stockton opened in 1933 as the first inland seaport in California. It handles bulk cargo such as fertilizer, cement and rice on docks set far from the coast.
